The Society was formed in 1966 at the time of a national groundswell of public concern about the damage being done to the environment. The thoughtless demolition of buildings of historic or architectural interest; the destruction of our town centres, the encroachment of towns into the country and the pollution of our rivers. These were just a few of our concerns.

Ashton-under-Lyne is no Chester or York but there are some buildings of historic and architectural interest within its boundaries which have been ‘listed’. However, many others have disappeared or are sadly neglected and our aims and objectives set out in 1966 remain as valid now as then.
